Coblation
A new, gentle surgical procedure
What is Coblation?
The term COBLATION means “controlled ablation”, in German “kontrollierte Abtragung” (controlled removal).
COBLATION technology involves the generation and application of a high-energy field called “discharge plasma”. This plasma removes tissue through a chemical process in which high-energy particles in the plasma break down molecules in the tissue.
- COBLATION operates at lower temperatures than other radiofrequency-based (RF) technologies
- The plasma field of 100mm - 200mm enables the precise removal of soft tissue
- Coblation® is an innovative technology that quickly and effectively removes soft tissue using radiofrequency energy and saline solution. Coblation® is not a thermal process. Thus, the surrounding healthy tissue is spared and healing is faster and less painful than with conventional methods.
Advantages of Coblation
- Gentlest surgical technique
- The flexible Coblation probe makes it easy and safe to reach hard-to-reach parts of the adenoids (“polyps”), leaving no blocking parts behind.
- Little or no bleeding during the operation
- Much lower risk of secondary bleeding
- Less pain: patients can return to their usual activities more quickly, and normal food intake is possible more quickly

Uses in children
- Adenotomy (“polyp removal”)
- Tonsillotomy (partial removal of the palatine tonsils)
- Tonsillectomy (intracapsular removal of the palatine tonsils)
Uses in adults
- Tonsillotomy or intracapsular tonsillectomy (reduction of the palatine tonsils or removal within the capsule) for snoring, obstructive sleep apnea
- Shortening of the uvula for snoring
- Kriptolysis (opening of ducts that house tonsil stones)
